Benedict Puglisi was meant to be a Luthier. Growing up as the son of Sicilian and Irish descendants, in a house where music and art was held in high esteem. Studying music formally in his High School years at Box Hill College, it was there that Benedict was first introduced to the passion of playing Double Bass. He continued his studies when he went to La Trobe University by studying composition, contemporary music and very importantly, the physics of sound. This formed the catalyst for his background in instrument making and repairs.
Benedict first entered the field of Luthiery in 1988, obtaining an apprenticeship with Violin Maker John Ferwerda. He started as a specialist in bow repair, restoration and re-hairing before turning his hand to restoration and repair. In seven years with John, a Mittenwald graduate, he was strictly trained in all aspects of Luthiery.
Benedict then travelled to Europe and the United Kingdom where he worked and studied, including courses with Juliet Barker in Cambridge. Upon his return to Australia, Benedict opened his workshop, Atelier Puglisi, which has continued to grow and expand from its conception above a delicatessen to the extensive workshop that exists today.
Benedict’s natural attention for detail, love of music, studies in scientific acoustics, and his immense passion for the Double Bass has ensured that his work has, and will always, remain at the highest possible standard.
